I stumbled across the ‘GoodGuide’ app the other day and I literally can’t stop using it. What it does is it allows you to take your phone, open the app, then scan the barcode of literally ANY product, and receive all kinds of information about how eco friendly the company is.
For example, since its flu season, if you are wanting to purchase cough drops but you want to make sure that you are buying the most ecologically responsible brand, just quickly scan the barcodes of a few different packages and GoodGuide will send you back a rating for each company, thus allowing you to support the company with the most Green practices.
GoodGuide has a database of over 120,000 products; anything from dog foods to carpet cleaners.
Another fun thing to do is to scan an item that your significant other purchases and then scoff at the environmental rating…as I did with the Suave Shampoo she bought. 5.5???
The app also allows you to customize your preferences for what you care about most. You can create shopping lists before you even go to the grocery store so you don’t have to fumble around with your phone in the store. If climate change and fair trade are your primary concerns, ‘GoodGuide’ will filter out all the products with low ratings. Also, if you scan an item you use at home, you can click on the ‘Top Alternative Products’ and find a product that will better suit your beliefs.
I continue to believe that it is the little things that make all the difference. This app allows you to reward companies for caring about our planet and the life that inhabits it. Download GoodGuide and use it to really make a difference.
