Every week I will be blogging about an eco friendly non-profit organization that is doing great things for the planet. My goal is to support these organizations by promoting their green pursuits and applaud them for their achievements. Researching these organizations made me inspired and I hope Green America inspires you too.
Green America has been around since 1982 with a vision of “Working for a world where all people have enough, where all communities are healthy and safe, and where the bounty of the Earth is preserved for all the generations to come.” What makes Green America unique is that they focus on financial strategies to see their vision fulfilled.
Here is a summary of a few of their projects:
Green Business Certification: Green America has created a business network of entities dedicated to harnessing the economic power of consumers, investors and businesses to promote social justice and environmental sustainability. In order to receive the certification the company must: Actively use their business as a tool for positive social change; operate a “values-driven” enterprise according to principles of social justice AND environmental sustainability; and they must be environmentally responsible in the way they source, manufacture, and market their products and run their operations and facilities. If you meet those requirements you get the stamp of approval by Green America:
1) Fossil fuel company divestment: In other words, Green America helps people get rid of mutual funds and financial partners that support companies that are depleting our fossil fuels and replaces those companies with Green companies on the rise. Very cool.
2) Clean Energy Victory Bonds: Green America is trying to put together a clean energy bond (think War Bonds) that will allow people to invest in a bond that greens the earth.
3) Our Energy First Campaign: Green America is pushing for a decreased reliance on foreign energy and pleading with the people to start saving energy so that we can curb climate change and decrease our use of precious resources. They offer a list for every day people to start this movement: 23 Steps for a Greener You.
Green Credit Cards: Lastly, Green America is doing something really cool with credit cards. Not the sexiest topic in the world but I think they are making a major impact here. I know EVERYONE loves their frequent flier miles credit cards, but at least consider this:
Green America is encouraging responsible consumers to obtain “green” credit cards. These cards are unique in that they donate a portion of their proceeds to organizations that support the environment. Most major credit cards, by contrast, direct their proceeds to executive compensation or investing in environmentally harmful activities.
Whether or not to use credit to makes purchases is another topic all together, but if you are someone who does use a credit card, why not promote a good cause while doing so. Rewards cards are great and all but just imagine that with every swipe you are helping to protect our forests, public lands and animals all around the world. Really cool.
