Hats off to you, REI. “REI believes that being outside makes our lives better. That’s why this Black Friday, we’re closing all 143 of our stores and paying our employees to head outside.”
Couldn’t be more proud to be an REI member! REI believes “a life lived outdoors is a life well lived and, instead of fighting it out in the aisles, we’d rather spend Black Friday in the outdoors. Join us and #OptOutside on November 27th.”
Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) started as a consumer-owned cooperative in 1938. Being a consumer co-op, instead of a publicly-traded company, enables them to focus on the long-term interests of the co-op and its members. Anyone can shop at REI, member or not. But co-op members pay $20 for a lifetime membership and receive a portion of the cooperative’s profits each year based on a percentage of their eligible purchases (think rebate check!). As a long-time member of this unique co-op, my perspective of REI: Quality, Integrity, Stand behind their products, Feel valued, Trust them!
What could be more ecofriendly than paying your employees to spend the day outside on Black Friday? And inviting us to join them! So, I’m opting outside and here’s where I’ll be:
