In a few weeks, my CSA farm will start delivering weekly baskets of bountiful produce.  Lettuce, kale, swiss chard, spinach, peas, carrots, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, strawberries…LOTS of healthy organic food!  Each season, I struggle with fitting all the produce into my relatively space-limited side-by-side refrigerator.  Hard-shell storage containers haven’t worked for me because I quickly run out of room for all the many things we need to store.  So, I have a confession to make – I’ve relied on ziplock gallon plastic bags which are flexible enough to cram everything into my frig and work well at keeping produce fresh.  Yes, I know…you can wash them and reuse them…but only for so long.  They are simply not eco-friendly and this is one of those habits I wanted to change.

So, my eco-friendly pursuit has been to find an alternative to disposable bags to store veggies, something that will keep  them fresh and crisp for at least a week.   Guess what?  I FOUND it!  Yahoo!

Planet Wise makes a semi-transparent gallon zippered bag that really works!  According to the company and (another great company – look for future post!), these reusable bags, made of durable and contaminant-free EVA, are BPA-free and food-saafe.  Intrigued and hopeful that these bags would work, I bought one and tested it with kale.  I washed and spun-dry the kale (as I do with all greens) and then stored it in the bag for two weeks.  The kale stayed remarkably fresh and as crisp as the day I put it in the bag!

Planet Wise is a privately owned family corporation founded by a husband and wife team who work together to ensure the “highest quality products while following responsible environmental and social business practices”.  Their website states: “To reduce our environmental impact, all products have been thoroughly researched and are all PVC-free and lead-free (a surprising fact is that many zippers have been painted using paint that contains lead).  All the products we have developed are reusable and have been designed to replace disposable items which help to reduce waste that ends up in the landfills.”

I am so impressed with how this bag stores veggies that I just ordered 8 more bags!  If you know of other great alternatives for storing produce (particularly greens like lettuce, kale, spinach, swiss chard), please let us know!  Join us on our pursuit of an eco-friendly lifestyle!  One step at a time…
